R.A.D. Grade 8 Award
Must have taken RAD Grade 7 or have teacher approval.
A special level culminating the RAD’s Upper Grade levels – dancers must satisfy a minimum level of expertise upon their final assessment session. Each section (port de bras, adage, pirouettes, petite allegro, grand allegro, free movement (Lyrical style), and the variation) presents a style and setting with heavy emphasis on performance quality and exquisite technique. The Russian character-style of dance draws from the 7 prior grades.
This level culminates the Royal Academy of Dance’s graded levels. Still evoking the sensitivity of the Romantic Era of ballet, all exercises become full-on variations and are seen as solos.
Taking the maturity of 8+ years of ballet study, these candidates gain incredible stamina as well as illustrating beautiful performance quality.
The standards set by the RAD remain elevated, with anticipation of well established technique, performance quality and musicality. This grade also allows for individual interpretation for each variation, encouraging and developing a greater sense of musicality.
The basis of all the graded levels is held in balletic training, though Free Movement allows dancers to explore more modes of movement. The Free Movement (similar to Lyrical Ballet) follows some of the early 1900 pioneers of dance, such as Martha Graham and Isadora Duncan, who forged an improvisational style that opened doors for a freer style of movement.
Rounding out the curriculum of the RAD Upper Grades are the 1800 court dances of Eastern Europe, Polish, Hungarian, Ukrainian, Russian
